What is the expected time commitment on a weekly basis for the Chanter Program?
The program requires meeting with the Cantors on a weekly basis for 2-3 hours via Zoom. These live sessions are typically scheduled on Saturday mornings/afternoons or weeknights (U.S. Eastern Time Zone).
During these meetings, the Cantors assess each student’s progress on the assigned hymns, provide individualized feedback and correction, and guide students in preparation for the final end-of-semester oral examinations. These sessions are an essential component of the program.
In addition to the live sessions, students should expect to dedicate an average of 3-5 hours per week to independent study and practice. The required study time may vary depending on the complexity of the hymns being taught, the student’s prior familiarity with the material, and the individual student’s experience and learning pace.
What are the age requirements?
- Chanter Program: 18 years and up
- Hymnologist Program: 21 years and up
Can I bring my family to the Convention?
Families of students are welcome to register together for the convention. A subsidized price is given for spouses, older children (up to 18) and younger children. Young children are not permitted to attend hymns sessions. Family members are not permitted to attend Oral Exams.
Are the programs open to females? Or only males?
The Chanter Program is open to both males and females. The Hymnologist Program is limited to males only.
What times are the live Zoom calls with the Cantors?
Students enrolled in the Chanter Program are expected to attend the weekly live Zoom sessions with the Cantors. These sessions are generally held on Saturday mornings or afternoons (U.S. Eastern Time Zone). During the month of Kiahk, sessions may also be scheduled on Sunday afternoons or on weeknights as needed.
Where is the Institute located?
The Asaph Hymns Institute is primarily an online institute. The only in-person component of the program is the annual convention, which is dedicated to administering oral examinations and fostering fellowship with the Cantors and fellow students.
The annual convention is usually held at St. Stephen Retreat Center in Titusville, FL.
